Charlotte's Web/Stuart Little/the Trumpet of the Swan

Stuart Little
Stuart Little is a mouse that is about 2 inches tall. Stuart is part of the family of the Fredrick.C.Littles. He has a friendly but shy manner. He's very smart for a mouse but his size gives him trouble sometimes. His life is an adventure when he sets out on the age of seven,he trys to find his dearest friend,Margalo, a friendly little bird who stayed with the Littles in their Boston Fern.

Stuart Little is an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it beacause it was funny and it had interesting vocabulary. There were some sad parts in the book. This Book got me absorbed into it.

I would recommend this book for children of the ages of 8 to 12. If you like fantasy stories then you would love this book. If you are a person who likes certain kinds of fantasy books then you should probably enjoy Stuart Little because you may get absorbed into the book. Also if you like fantasy books that have animals in it that talk and you like the Author E.B.White then you'll like this book.

This is a great book - it has adventure and entertainment.
The best part of this book was when the sail boat race took place. I liked that part because the policeman fell in the water. Also, I liked being able to see the world through a mouse's eyes. Margalo is a great character in the book because she is smart and she helped Stuart. I am looking forward to reading another book by E.B. White, such as Charlotte's Web and the Trumpet of the Swan.

a great author with three great books to share!
All three books are pretty good. Charlottes web is the best with a cute little pig named wilbur longing for a friend. Stuart little is also a good book. You get to see the world through the eyes of a mouse. The third book-Trumpet of the swan-is only ok!

Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan
Published in Hardcover by Holiday House (March, 2001)
Authors: Chi Fa Lu, Becky White, Lu Chi Fa, and Rebecca White
Average review score:

Double Luck
I feel fortunate for having read this book. Lu Chi Fa describes his life as an orphan in Communist China. Through his life he has one dream of reaching America. The pain, abuse and anguish he had to suffer are heartbreaking. The people he met who were both good and bad experiences for him are all people he learned from. Full of historical data and a sense of hope I wish more people would hear this amazing story.

Why 5 stars?:
Lu Chi Fa and Becky White have told the true story of a Chinese orphan growing up during the Communist takeover. The history and sense of hope are inspiring and educational. Moreover, the text is written well and keeps the reader interested in turning the pages.

Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan
I loved Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan because the boy, Chi Fa, was so brave and he never stopped believing in his lifelong dream. Chi Fa and all the people in the book were so real I felt I knew them well. After his parents died, Chi Fa's life was one hard adventure after another. He endured being cold and nearly starving, having to move every time he found a place to sleep, and risking his life to flee the Communist takeover of China. Through everything, he remained a kind person who remembered the people who had loved him. When Chi Fa wished on the Orphan Star in the sky, I very much wanted his dream to come true. It was exciting for me to read from one chapter to the next and I didn't want to put the book down. I intend to lend the book to my teacher and I hope she will ask our librarian to get a copy for my school.

Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan
Every day we hear about the countless children of the world who have no parents, no homes and who suffer the pain of constant hunger. Lu Chi Fa and Becky White have brought one of those children vividly to life in Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan.

The orphan boy, Chi Fa, is anything BUT a tragic character. His optimism, his love of life and the joy he derives from simple things, such as tasting a peach for the first time, light up every page. He shows maturity and courage far beyond his years as he faces many life-threatening situations. Along with the story of a remarkably courageous boy, we are given descriptions of a beautiful country and an insight into the customs of the Chinese people.

I read the book aloud to my 8 and 10-year-old granddaughters in just two days because they kept insisting on "just one more chapter". All of us enjoyed a truly exciting book with memorable characters. It would be almost impossible to read Double Luck, Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan without being personally uplifted.

Only In My Dreams
This is the first book I've read by kimberley White and I must say, she really did do a good job.The characters were so real that it was believeable. It truly was a page turner, also covered a lot of ereas like life back home with your parents, life in small towns, friendly churches, nosey people, loving families, meddeling parents, In-law problems, this list goes on and it took all of that to make this a readable and good book. I say keep up the good work Kimberley! Did I forget to mention love love love, bring on the sequel!!! Lots Of Luck To You.

It was easy to love this couple....
I saw the book at the grocery store and decided to wait to buy it at my favorite spot. My favorite spot didn't have it and so I rushed back to buy this book...I'm glad I did. This man (Greyson)waited twenty-something years to be with the only woman (Sutton) he would ever love. I liked this couple because they didn't make each other suffer. He loved her...she loved him and they didn't keep it a secret, but worked to have what they both wanted --Each Other. I would like to see Chevy and Maddie find a love that is unique to them as well. I would buy a book about Chevy, Maddie, Kirkland, and ??. Great job Ms. White. You have a fan.

Excellent -- Love Your Work
"Only in My Dreams" is the first book I have read by Ms. White and I truly, truly enjoyed it. I had a hard time putting it down. I myself being an AA woman in my late 30s, find it hard to find a book by an AA author that I truly enjoy reading. This one will definitely be placed on my keeper shelf to be read again and again. I sincerely hope Ms. White plans on doing follow-up stories on the other characters in this book. The hero's brothers, Chevy and Kirkland, would make great follow-up stories . I really fell in love with Chevy, the gentle giant. I will be feverishly searching the web for any and all of her past and upcoming books. Great job. Keep up the good work.

All-time Great
I can't find words expressive enough to convey how much I love this book. Its characters have stayed with me vividly in the 13 years since I first read it. Get this book, keep it, do not trust your friends to return it.

One HELL of a read... a real page-turner
I found Mr. Kendall's work to be amazing. The storyline is well developed and the characters are phenomonal. The thought of Earth humans being an orphaned race pitied by the rest of the races is an intriguing concept not often explored. Especially the fact that humans take that shame and turn it into pride. And the "family" tone, absolutely breathtaking. If you can find a copy of this book, GET IT! You will NOT be disappointed

One of the few books that I didn't want to ever end!!
I read this book so many times that I almost knew it by heart. If ever a book deserved to be made into a movie, this is one. I would spend my last dime to replace this book.

Baby Beluga (Raffi. Raffi Songs to Read.)
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (August, 1997)
Authors: Raffi and Ashley Wolff
Average review score:

Make the song come to life with pictures
My sons love Raffi music and videos. We have checked out all of his "song" books at the library so I decided to buy a few of them for our own use. My guys grab the books when they hear the song and like me to turn the pages with the music. My only complaint is that the library editions had the music and words at the back, whereas the board books do not, so if you can carry a tune but haven't heard the song, you won't know the rhythm of the music. But these books are still great for reading, even if you don't know the tune. And if you have Raffi music in the car, include this book for the back seat passengers to "read" while the music is playing.

Baby Beluga has delightful illustrations of "sea creatures" (whales, penguins, etc) as well as making the song personal by including a young eskimo child in the book. Most children are fans of whales, seals and the like anyways, but parents should enjoy reading this book to their children. It's easy to read, with clear, large print and simple pictures. Great for the toddler age to read or sing along and the short enough for the under 18 months crowd. And while the animals are not labeled, it would be perfect for a before and after book if you take young children to an aquarium or zoo.

Beautiful intro to ocean wildlife
A simple beautiful tale of the magnificent beluga whale. You just don't find very many young childrens books involving a beluga.

We went on a visit to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Seattle, Washington where they have real white beluga whales in full display at the underground aquarium. My children began singing the song, remembering one of their favorite songs and books.

The pictures are simple and uncluttered. Children will focus on the story, song and cute little white whale.

Another excellent Raffi production. Great for reading or singing. A very peaceful, natural feel and connection to the water. It makes a grand bedtime moment.

The only thing missing is the music!
My two year old daughter LOVES this book/song. My only complaint is that in this book, the music isn't included at the end (Raffi's "Wheels on the Bus" song to read has the sheet music included on the last page). Without also owning the "Baby Beluga" Raffi CD, we wouldn't know the tune. Other than that, it's great.

Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?
Published in Hardcover by Aladdin Paperbacks (January, 1996)
Author: Nancy White Carlstrom
Average review score:

It's one of my daughter's favorite books
We love Jesse Bear. My husband and I are touched by the way our now 15 months old baby loves this book...she likes to hear the story over and over (like is normal for all kids at this age) a lot more than she like to hear other stories, she knows many words and acts out (in her very own way) the things that Jesse Bear is doing. When Jesse Bear's pants dance she dances, she touches her toes and screams TOES! when Jesse Bear is playing with a rose in his toes...She waits excited for the part about Jesse Bear wearing his CHAIR! and for the carrots and PEAS!, she loves the blanket that's blue and plays peek-a-boo and gives "bear hugs" to us...She just totally loves it. The illustrations of the book are beautifully done...Although I did notice that the papa bear comes home at night just for bath and bed time I don't consider that to be incorrect at all...the story portraits a very loving papa bear who -in this case like for many real life families- is working out all day. The mama is home taking care of Jesse Bear...I think this story could represent any happy family's normal day, whether is the mom or the dad working out of the home or both, the story has a main caregiver with the child all day and a loving parent who comes later on. The rhyme is nice, sweet and musical. My daughter can spend a long time just browsing through its pages and mumbling with joy things about Jesse Bear's adventures. This book is MUST HAVE for babies and young children.

Another addition to my baby gift bag
This book is just delightful. Jesse Bear, the toddler protagonist, spends his day "wearing" different items -- from a shirt to sand to his chair (my son's favorite). The story is told in rollicking rhyme with gorgeous illustrations. I'm a fan of board books for this age group -- they tend to be a little hard on the paper versions. A definite must-have!

perfect for our almost 2 year old
As she approaches her 2nd birthday, our little girl is getting to the point now where simple board books are too boring, but lengthy stories are still too much for her to absorb. We stumbled across this Jesse Bear book somehow, and it's perfect for her. The illustrations are bright and pleasing. Plus, she can really relate to Jesse's typical day- getting dressed, playing, eating, Daddy coming home from work, bathing, and going to bed. Now I just need to find more books like this! One recommendation: If your child doesn't tear pages, I'd get the hardcover edition. First, I borrowed the hardcover from our library and then I ordered the board book from Amazon. The board book is much smaller than the hardcover, so now my daughter asks for me to read "BIG Jesse Bear book," and I have to explain that we only have the small one!

The New First Three Years of Life
Published in Paperback by Holiday House (August, 1995)
Author: Benton L. White
Average review score:

Not everybody has common sense.
My parents made a lot of mistakes so I had to teach myself how to approach parenthood by reading books and observing other parents. I also sat in on some of Burton White's parenting classes in Newton, MA. This book is very well researched. The bibliography is excellent, too. I read through most it including Childhood and Society by Eric Ericson. Burton White and Eric Ericson both recommend something called "Mutual Regulation". The parent is in control and firm for some things and the child gets to control and lead for others. It's worth studying. Mutual regulation also applies to other relationships. My journey of reading, starting with this book, has helped me to become "unspoiled and happy" so now I am no longer terrified of becoming a parent.

If your parents were terrific, you may find this book to be full of "common sense".

Great for the toy recommendations alone
When I was a new mother, for the toy recommendations alone, I found this book of great and indispensable value. (Though I was using an earlier edition, I am sure the toy recommendations are still as useful.) Dr. White tells you which toys are worthwhile and which are a waste of time and money. Often, the most expensive toys are the ones that may make the parents or grandparents or whoever feel good, but that are not useful or interesting to the baby or young child. With Dr. White's recommendations, you can avoid buying the useless toys and instead spend the money on something of true value for your child.

Also, sometimes a toy doesn't look like much and may be overlooked by a parent, but can provide a child with hours of enjoyment. And for that matter, there are things around the house that a child can enjoy that cost nothing, such as plastic mixing bowls and other safe cookware. My daughter had her own cupboard of safe things so she could keep herself occupied while staying with me in the kitchen. (The other cupboards had child safety latches on them.) She loved it, and so did I.

Probably the one thing that Dr. White did not emphasize enough in the edition I was using was the importance of reading to your child, starting at an early age and continuing until they no longer want you to read to them. Literacy is of vital importance to anyone, and it starts with being read to often. And not just read to, but read to in a loving, interactive way, where the child is allowed to ask questions and where the pictures and story are open to discussion.

So remember to buy books for your children, your nieces and nephews and other young relatives, and the children of your friends, and to read those books to them when possible.

If you can afford only one childcare book, buy this one!
We bought this book when our son was born in 1990. After having read other experts (Leach, Brazelton, Spock), we decided that this was the best of the lot--followed closely by Brazelton. White discusses each significant stage of a vey young child's growth and tells the new parent what he/she may expect.

The world renouned Missouri Parents as Teachers program is based upon this book. We are from Missouri but did not elect to enroll our child in the program until we read Burton White.

We have bought this book for just about everyone we know who was having a baby and we're still buying it!

Randy White Gives Doc Ford A Great Start
My sister got me hooked up on Randy White's Doc Ford novels this summer. I am from Sarasota so it was interesting to read about action and adventure occurring in an area that is close to home. This is the first Doc Ford novel and although I liked it it is not my favorite.

Doc is an ex-NSA officer that has returned home to SW Florida to start a new life. He is a marine biologist (his front while being an NSA operative) who is the owner of the one man operation Sanibel Biological Supply. He lives in an old stilt house on fictional Dinkins Bay that also serves as his lab. Close by, at Dinkins Bay Marina, are his neighbors and friends. His best friend, Tomlinson, who reminds me physically of the character Jeff Bridges played in The Big Lebowski, lives on a sailboat at the marina. The two are opposites that author White has said in an interview represent his own coming to terms with his logical (Ford) and spirital (Tomlinson) sides.

This novel has Ford rescuing a dead highschool friend's small boy from a group of radical terrorists in a Central American country. Ford's NSA past is revisited as he sets off to save the boy with the freespirit "hippy" Tomlinson by his side. This novel has a twist for an ending and like all White's Doc Ford novels gives you a history lesson to boot.

White was a saltwater guide and does a wonderful job of explaining different mysteries the Gulf in that part of Florida holds. He also knows the ins and outs of a marina's micro-community and does an excellent job of describing how it feels to live with a group of boaters on the water. Also, White has done a great deal of research on the Calusa Indians of Florida as well as the ancient peoples of Central and South America.

As I said, this is not my favorite Doc Ford Novel. My favorites were Captiva (dealing with the Net Ban issue) and Heat Islands.
But it doesn't matter which one you start off with, if you like one, you'll like them all.

gone fishin
I'm never sure whether I enjoy Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford mysteries because I love Captiva Island, or because they're as good as they seem. I've read all of them, and re-read this one recently. Reading it in a more urban environment than Sanibel or Captiva Island has convinced me it's the latter. His ex CIA agent turned marine biologist detective is a wonderful character, virile, but sweet, too. While world-weary Doc Ford is as laid-back as only too many hours spent looking for fish on Florida's Gulf coast can make one, he's ready for action whenever he's got to get that boat moving!

Captures the essence of Sanibel
The best way to read this page turner is by actually being in Sanibel. Sanibel is indeed still Florida'a Florida. This is the last unspoiled place in Florida and Randy Wayne White captures it in all its glory. In addition, he brings forth yet another Doc Ford adventure with its many twists and turns. This is an intelligent person's mystery series and the perfect way to escape on a hot, lazy day.

White Lion's Lady

Authors: Tina St. John and Tina St John
Average review score:

This author only gets better and better
White Lion's Lady is a superb medieval romance by historical romance author, Tina St. John! I swear, she only gets better with each book. WLL captivated me from the moment I read the first page in which Isabel de Lamere meets her "Lion," Griffin of Droghallow. Years later, Griff is the kind of man who will do anything for a price, even kidnap an heiress. So he does. However, the dangerous circumstances he finds himself in, the most potent of which are Isabel's obvious and bewitching charms, throws him into a whirlwind of danger and high stakes love as he and Isabel journey together through the middle ages and into each other's hearts. Now I cannot wait for Tina's next book, Black Lion's Bride! Highly, highly recommended.

Exciting medieval romance!
Prepare yourself for an exciting medieval romance you will not want to put down.

WHITE LION'S LADY is the 1st in a 2 part series.

Eighteen year old Isabel de Lamere, ward to the Crown, is on her way to her betrothed, Sebastian Montborne (who you will read about in BLACK LION'S BRIDE). On her way to the Montborne's she is abducted by Griffin, the White Lion. She does not realize at first that this is the man who she met first as a boy, the boy whose medallion she carries everywhere she goes. The boy she remembers represents honor and chivalry.

Unfortunately Griffin has become a hardened man, made to carry out tasks that are distasteful and each day wear at his soul. His evil step-brother now sets him out on the task of kidnapping Isabel. Upon returning Isabel to his step-brother, and being denied the bounty promised him, Griffin and Isabel escape and continue on to her betrothed. During this time, they fall into a forbidden love.

Tina St. John weaves an enchanting tale of love, acceptance, and high adventure. The chemistry between these two characters sizzles, and it is a delightful read that you won't want to miss.

Tina St John at her very best!
WHITE LION'S LADY is a romance to be treasured. Tina St. John shows us why she is truly one of the rising stars of romance. Griffin and Isabel's story will touch your heart from first page to last. Ms. St. John moves her reader through the innocence of a little girl's crush to a woman's reality that love is never easy and the dreams of childhood are easily shattered. Griffin is a dark and enigmatic hero and Isabel is a heroine that you can't help but adore. This is true page turner! Well done, Tina!
